For a part like that I'd probably go new too. The work and part will be warranted by your specialist. A second hand part won't be. I'd be less bothered for a fuel pump, alternator or other simple bolt on and easy enough to access part.

Agreed purely because it’s a big job that involves potential resetting valve timings etc

Well the good news is it looks like it’s the lambda sensor on bank 456 so not a big job like the variocam would have been.

ive just had the biggest breakfast in the cafe across the road from Lee in celebration, feeling a bit sick now..

Great news Steve, I'm over at CPS next week for a service/MOT and a Chow Shed feed.

I did try to invite @John K along but he promptly made arrangements to be as far away from Toddington as possible when I'm around ;)

😂😂😂😂

Great news and even more recommendation for Lee - a less trusted garage could have easily stung you for the more expensive job!

Although you should be more worried that you had breakfast without inviting @John K - he won't be happy

Actually I would have if I had known he was that close, I’m sure I’ll be there again soon.

And yes that had crossed my mind, an £850 for variocam or £180 for the lamda, big difference and reinforcement of why I go to Lee.

Brilliant news

Mine is in an indy today having a aos fitted and oil and filter change to see if there is any bits in it will let you know what they find

Hopefully you’ll have some good new too, I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

You've just eaten £670 worth of breakfast?  I'd feel a bit sick too...!

Yes but I dont need to eat for a month now so factoring in those savings I think I’m still up on the deal.

Great news it was relatively cheap @the baron. Was it diagnosed from an error code? If so, would it not show up on a cheap reader?

No, Lee had it plugged into a computer and showed a live graph of both lambdas, one was flatlined and the other went up and down as it should, clearly showing that one was not working, you wouldn’t get that from a hand held unit.

the codes I got from the small odb2 reader just showed misfire on banks 456

You can get that from an OBD2 dongle and an App. I went to look at an 2003 car and bought a £20 dongle and downloaded a free App called Carscanner and it showed all sorts of graphs of live data. I remember checking the lambdas went up and down as they should. Suprised me how much data was available for such cheap kit.

Interesting, do you know what kit that was @Nobbie?

paid £20 from ECP as I needed it immediately, but there are much cheaper ones on eBay that may work just as well. I used it with my IPad, but an IPhone should work as well. Suprised how easy it was to use, just plugged in and it worked. Must try it on my 99 2.5 and see if I get anything.
