Peterborough so fairly central...there is a 2005 engine number 61601391 on for the right money in Leicester which I’ll probably look at...can’t find IMS thread to see if that is good or bad? 85k so might need a clutch but is the right money as in around 9k

Funny isn’t it, last summer there were a few decent looking 987 for sale on here at what I thought were very decent prices (all in the £10k region).   Don’t feel you have to jump for the wrong car, these Are fairly common so the likelihood is the right car will come along.

For cars that have been mothballed or done near no mileage for a couple of years this can cause issues though likely no long term negative effects, but beware dead batteries, rusty or seized brakes, dry aircon seals (losing gas), cracked/hard tyres etc

The year/age/mileage you will be looking at, if it hasn’t already been done it may not be far from needing some suspension refresh work, brake discs etc, so check these if possible. As stated above a slightly higher mileage car with the work having been done may end up needing less spent.

Definitely don’t worry about Bose, it makes fitting a better than PCM head unit more of a pain. And some people suggest the Bose isn’t that great and the sub is irritatingly boomy.

Heated seats are a “nice to have” but not essential really.

I previously had a lovely 98S 3.2 which had lots of options included heated seats and afew aftermarket additions. I last month bought a 2005 987S 3.2 (the 3.2 on an 05 or 55 plate is still in the cheaper £330 ish VED/RFL bracket!) My car doesn’t have Bose, heated seats, parking sensors and it’s black, which was the only colour I didn’t really want. But it had a full stamped and invoice history, low number of owners, 70k on the clock, owned by a Porsche indie garage owner personally, and it had lots of recently replaced parts (brakes, pasm active suspension, 4 tyres, wheels refurbished, aftermarket exaust and much more). So I bought it as it drove perfectly and felt right. I drove half a dozen bad examples before it which made this one stand out clearly. You’ll know when it’s “right”.

Definitely don’t discount on colour, mileage and spec. Condition and history are more important with these cars IMO.

I didn’t realise earlier 2005 3.2 are on the lower rfl bracket...

think I need to keep some of my wants in there otherwise it might get odd...back to the internet searches...

Looks to have the bigger single bearing according to second post on here.

Similar to you, I started out with a £10k budget looking for a 987.1 bur refused to pay the higher RFL, then managed to use man maths to convince SWMBO that a £20k+ 987.2 pdk was the best option, which i’ve had now for coming up to a year. They are great cars - have fun on the hunt and enjoy.

other places to try at CarGurus, gumtree, FB market place and carandclassic - spread you’re net far and wide and the right car will come up

That first one just doesn’t quite add up for me - not 2 owners, he’s been using it on trade plates for 2 years so had more. Spelling doesn’t inspire confidence, they aren’t 997 wheels, they are normal lobsters.

MOT history doesn’t make for good reading either, doesn’t sound like a well loved car, doctor or not

I have just got into a 987.1 2005 ( but MY06 with a engine no in the bigger bearing range). Like you I spent hours and hours researching and looking at adds.

My advice;

Stick to your base spec. If you want heated heats only go and see ones with heated seats, don't let people tell you that you don't need them, this purchase is not about need.

Wait for the right car. For less than 10k you will get a manual in your spec that has had a significant amount of major maintenance and well documented service history and have enough left in change to replace the clutch and RMS. I chose receipts over mileage but that's preference, lower mileage cars command stronger money but aren't necessarily better cars. I looked for an enthusiasts car and found one one the porscheclub website with help from this forum. I avoided anything sat on a non specialist dealers yard for anything over a month. You sound pretty clued up but just in case make sure you check the MOT history on cardatachecks.

Keep in mind that although the engine number should indicate a larger IMS bearing on 05/06 cars, only a visual inspection (when the clutch is done) can confirm for certain.  A new clutch shouldn't cost more than £700 from a reputable Indy. I factored this in when I bought mine and it will be done along with the RMS (usually 25 quid extra while the clutch is being done) as preventative maintenance. If they establish that I have the older 986 style IMS it will be about another £500-600 to upgrade it and if my flywheel is shot (rare) another £300.

Good luck with the search

I did, but being the fickle person I am...not keen on the hood or the alloys.

edit. It’s a lovely car, important limited edition, but I had not seen the interior. It’s not for me. But as an example of the model it looks amazing.

which is my issue entirely, as that is a model that would increase in value.

I could drop a hood on it and wheels and store the originals but I think it doesn’t feel right to do all that...

I'm just being impatient...I think as others have said ‘I’ll know when’

Also for other lurkers ... don’t buy a boxster for speed. They are not slow granted but my diesel (mapped mildly) has almost the same ‘pull feel’

BUT and its a big one, with the roof down and the flat 6 doing its noise thing, that is what keeps me looking, over a 370z or a Z4. Such grin factor.

I couldn’t afford to buy and run a 911, as most are 20k plus some. I always want a 60’s 356 coupe but unless something magical happens financially this is never happening either. So my Porsche itch is focused on a Boxster....rightly or wrongly

The Boxster is a secret gem between those who’ve owned/driven one. Those who haven’t don’t understand and find it easy to mock them. Their loss though!

That RS60 is absolutely stunning and a bargain (note I even offered my 987S in part-ex for it, but doesn’t work financially for the seller).

If you’re anything like me though, owning a limited edition would be mentally tough as I love to modify and make a car my own, potentially ruining originality and putting the purists into meltdown (along with the resale value).

Like I said though, unless you hate a colour, don’t discount the possible perfect mechanical example. Mileage is merely a number and spec is merely nice to have. The price has to reflect these suitably (obviously) but then with the remaining budget you can add the extras/options/mods you feel are important and will be new and spot on creating the perfect car for you.

I thought I “needed” Sport-Chrono (with the switchable snappier throttle map and stop watch clock on the dash). But after driving mine without, in normal form it’s absolutely fine (brilliant) with adequate response. The chrono throttle pedal feel is possibly too on/off for the road anyway. If I need “more grunt/response” I’ll just get a remap and gain 10% everywhere for about £500.

Thank you. Don’t confuse me anymore...🤪🤪 I didn’t know of the chronic model...I thought it was just a clock lol

also I didn’t know these would map...had my scirocco done because the best spec/model was a 140bhp (can you see a theme here 🤣) so it’s now 180 but just is dull, it’s a lovely car well put together and well spec’d but is diesel and fwd.

I have now expanded search to silver! And early 3.2 has to be black Interior, just not keen on the odd hues. Again I know this might be my loss as there’s bound to be a yellow car with beige interior that is amazing everywhere!

and there is not a glut of Boxster interiors out there at super cheap to swap...I owned a early  big bumper gti and swapped the interior wholesale...but it cost me 300 quid from a breakers for the lot, and I sold my old one for 100!

i think it is the driver position, feedback and the noise for me. Most of the time we can’t drive fast these days, so it’s the kid in me that likes the noise in tunnels or that small overtaking manoeuvre where it comes on song....

Thanks guys, thanatoid the top of my list was the Cheshire one that if I’m honest I wanted to be right, the more local to me is the higher miles one.

Nobbie theres another page with the same ace Porsche... feeling like a stitch up so I’ll pass on that, I think.

there is a local car to me about 20 miles away that was in good nick but no service history since 45k in 2015 now on 69k, mots back up the miles but again just doesn’t feel ‘right’

is Tiptronic that wheezy? I’ve not been considering one as Porsche Gb guide says a manual is the best to get experience

thx

I changed my first ever Boxster - a 2005 Tip in near mint condition with only 35,000 miles, and myself the second owner. FSH. Because I didn't like the Tip - despite having been very happy with the same box in a previous BMW. Now have an 2011 PDK 3.4S, which has fewer toys - but was a one owner 25,000 mile car and mint - which I paid top dollar for from a dealer. And love to bits.  IMHO, the right car is better than one with all the toys. I had seen three with better spec and cheaper - but this one had me written all over it. Point? Make sure you are happy with a Tip via an extended drive including low speed town stuff, if it's going to be used everyday. Fitting paddles wouldn't have made any difference to what I didn't like about it. Although a complete gearbox remap might have helped.

Well been and it is very good for the money, actually way better than some at more than 10.

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F163561865842

it drives lovely, has good bodywork, service book..but it’s just not the one. I’m a picky so and so

so any lurkers email James on that ad, he is a lovely bloke and no BS.

it does have a couple of niggles but for the money it’s spot on, I can afford a wee but more so I’m going to hold out for a bit...

So what exactly put you off it?

I tend to agree with Sam, think you are looking for a unicorn with a horn of precious gems.
