DaveEFI
I've got a 2011 987.2 S PDK, which I find superb. Be interested to know how the version in the 981 is so much better?

Looks like they’ve removed them from the car now😩

I would politely/bluntly ask on collection “where have the front grilles gone, they were fitted when I viewed it as they should be now” ! Unless the seller temporarily removed them before sending it into the OPC to avoid questioning over modifications (odd). Be interested to know how the version in the 981 is so much better? ‘The problem I had was comparing it to a 981GTS, it is night and day but you would need to drive one to appreciate it. That was my first PDK car and I drove it almost exclusively in manual sport mode with the flappy paddles, it was such an emotional car, largely down to the noise and the gear changes. The PDK suited that car well and I enjoyed it, but jumping from that to a 987 PDK with sport Chrono, in sport mode just felt pedestrian. No doubt the lack of the soundtrack the 981GTS provides was part of that sensation but I found myself “lost” and waiting for the gears on a fast road test which was extremely frustrating. The PDK gearbox in the GTS is just quicker and more aggressive. I’ve picked the 987 up now, its sat on my drive, I had chance for a quick diversion from the 120miles return trip which was mostly motorway to try one of my favorite B roads, traffic was too heavy to go crazy but straight away the familiar control offered by manual over the engine was very comforting. It is of course helped by the fact the Porsche manual gearbox is so slick (and mine has Sport Chrono which again made more of a difference than I thought it would in a manual) The Porsche PDK system is great, the 981 is that much quicker that it addresses one of the main issued with it over manual ie the speed of response to the request to change, I found it very noticeable in the 987 version but that may be because I drove my 981 mainly in manual so noticed the difference even more ? I wonder if they removed them after the pics where taken but before it went on display or if someone pointed it out to them ? Anyway, the grills are fantastic and should have been factory fitted 😉

Lonewolfgjp
Glad you’ve picked it up and welcome to Black Brotherhood 😎 Interesting you’re thoughts on the PDK, mine is fantastic and lightning quick on gear change in any of modes. Was it a Black Edition PDK you drove? I think there was also a software update on the 987 PDK maybe that one hadn’t had it? I followed a 981 GTS PDK on our last run into Wales and I agree it’s a very special car and the exhaust note is fantastic 👌 Edited July 11, 2019 by Lonewolfgjp

Jonttt
So need some help to solve a little mystery from my quick inspection of the car when I got home. Whilst I was investigating all the cubby holes in the Frunk (and checking tool kit was still there lol) I spotted some trim which has been cut and a piece that has been made removable. This looks like its been done post factory but I’m not familiar enough with the model yet to know. So any ideas why this would have been done ? nb its the cubby hole at the back of the frunk which you can access from above and in front by removing plastic “doors” There is also a black cloth back in there, any idea what its for ? Lonewolfgjp
🤔 Absolutely no idea... I will have a look in mine tomorrow but I don’t remember seeing anything like that 👍
Lonewolfgjp
I wonder if it was maybe a tracker?
Jonttt
Ah, could be...... the car comes will a comprehensive folder of history including what seems like a complete sales pack, it includes the original tracker booklet/unused stickers and the 2 proximity fobs that you where supposed to keep on you when the car moved. I almost certainly had the Cobra (now vodaphone) Porsche supplied PVTS tracker fitted from new. But why remove it ? I know they can be difficult to recommission once switched off but they are just usually left in the car (my 981GTS has it which I got working for the first 12 months then stopped it as they would not do any sort of deal on their annual rates, the box is still on that car somewhere). Jonttt
Next question.......my PCM is on version 2.20 which has 4 digit postcode entry. I know there is a later version 2.24 which I think has 7 digit postcode search and also 2018 maps available. What is the best / easiest / cheapest way of getting the latest maps and software on PCM 3.0 ? nb I’m not looking at upgrading the head unit (not yet at least) as I want to live with the OEM first and see how I get on with it. Lonewolfgjp
The factory head unit is actually pretty good and yes you need the firmware update and map update. I need the same but it is a main dealer only job and about £400😩 I have explored all options and it has got to plugged in for 3/4hrs on the Porsche computer to do the postcode update 💩 I still use the sat nav but you need to type the full address in but it is very accurate 👍
Menoporsche
Someone found a cheap way round the 981 update, I expect the 987.2 is therefore available.

Jonttt
So the car is now on my drive.... collection from Coventry after a 2.5 hour train ride... and the view from my favourite bay window
Jonttt
I'm due to go away for week on Saturday, so won't have chance to get stuck into the TLC / OCD remedial works ........but some quick jobs I had prepared for.... replacement of the rather sad looking wheel centres.....not bad for £20 delivered ......( I negotiated on it being a £200 job to replace these 😁 ).... I thought I would check the wheel bolts to decide whether to paint black or replace with Stainless black jobbies....... Not unsurprisingly (based on experience) the "soft" OEM bolts where past their best  and so a full set of black stainless steel bolts ordered, they are not cheap but there is nothing worse than turning the head off an OEM bolt which has aged (ask me how I know :frustrated: )
Jonttt
I've already decided to give the OEM PCM interface a chance to impress me knowing that there are easy options to replace with android car play options. This is partly because I like the OEM look, my car has sport + which gives extra options on the OEM units for the personalisation of setting to each key (which would be lost) and I tend to not stream music that often, preferring the noise of the engine (not being able to stream is the main downside of PCM 3 to me)..... So I sourced a cheap Bluetooth music streamer. The beauty of this one is its very small USB device with a built in Aux audio lead which suits the multimedia interface of the 987 (hidden in the centre armrest) perfectly. As the USB is ignition switched my hope was that once synced to my phone it would simply connect evrey time and allow music streaming (I use Spotify) without any faffing about......it works perfectly... Its setup (plug and play) where it simply powers up on ignition via the USB, syncs to my phone and so my phone is ready to stream automatically, it then powers itself down when the car is locked ie as easy as it gets.....I just press the DISC button on the PCM to switch source to AUX I could have spent c£100 on a Bovee unit to give control of music from the PCM but I would rather do that from the phone (once I found a suitable phone mount) and this cost a lot less ....... in case I end up going for an alternative 3rd party head unit. ps the BOSE system in the 987 is ace, plenty of depth to the music for my tastes :thumb: So the dilema I have is the PCM 3 unit is on software version 2.20. This is pretty late (as it was a run out 2011 car in the model range) but 2.26 was the last version which gave 7 digit postcode searches (makes a big difference compared to 4 digit). The map is obviously also old, probably c2009/10 as originally installed. I think you have to upgrade to newer 2018 maps to get the v2.26 software (which is fine I would do that anyway) but its a dealer only upgrade as it has to be activated via PIWIS  ....... its a few hours job just shoving discs in which obviosly requires years of training so they charge full labour rates for it..... the cost is therefore c£400 I'm let to believe with most of that being labour :wack: .......so I need to think about that as it would pay a long way to a top replacement Android Auto head unit with all the bells and whistles. Therefore I'll see how I get on with the OEM unit for a while, maybe this year and decide next year :judge: The other downside is no DAB radio. now I actually quite like FM over DAB as it is less "pure" but there is less choice so again I'll have to see how I get on with it. Otherwise the Nav seems pretty good in a cute kind of way. It worked well on my way back from collection with clear instruction and display in the centre dial, it even had live traffic which seemed accurate which I was not expecting, yes WAZE/Google maps are better but so long as it gets me where I want to go efficiently I woudl rather stay OEM especially if I decide to upgrade to 2018 maps and 7 digit postcode search :?: I won't get chance to really get to know the car on the road prior to a week abroad so will reserve judgement / fuller review for a while. It has a tough act to follow v the 981GTS, in fact it can only fail in that respect ie as a drivers car BUT all I can say is I'm lovin it so far. As always its about the ownership experience and to me I've been there and done it with the fastest and the best, its not all about that, I'm loving the feeling of going back to basics and having a toy that I can just play with and not have to get too precious about :thumb: I'm hoping it fits in better between the classic aircooled 993 and my as modern as it can get luxury criuser daily. I got asked a lot which would I sell first ... the 993 or the 981GTS..... I think that question has been answered with some of the reasons above :bandit:
