Wow this thread is getting well juicy 😜. And 15 grand for a decent sports car...seems like a bargain to me. The 550 is bound to become collectable if it isn't already. I'm sure people said the same thing about 80's 911s 20 years ago, and we all know what's happened to those prices.

Well said Jono.

I recall circa 15 years ago being able to pick up a 964 for 15k!

As I say, the Anniversary's will only go one way in value and the one in question would have been 20k IMHO had it been a manual.

After owning 120 986's, I finally have a 550 that I am currently prepping :)

Here's the thing,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

If it were my money would I spend £20k on yet another not so special edition or would I take that £20k and,,,,,

Buy myself a nice daily that I can take the dog to the beach, kids to school, weekly shopping, dump runs, collect a washing machine/tumble dryer etc. etc.

Then I would ALSO buy (in my case sold) an immaculate concours winning MY04 2.7 986 or a leggy 987.2 for around 10k ish that I can actually drive without fear of putting miles on and thereby destroying it's value e.g. "find me another one". I can clearly recall the eijits on PCGB runs in Scotchland and the IOM checking their cars after a run and counting stonechips etc.

It is no secret that I have to 'cut my cloth to suit' so instead of buying a Porsche Macan/Cayenne I bought a Hyundai Tucson back in 2018 brand new through Car WOW. A work colleague bought a brand new Volvo XC40 around the same time and I was getting ribbed about his car being nicer than mine. So obviously I agreed that the Volvo was indeed lovely but then showed them an almost identical car currently for sale at that time. I then put it to the assembled audience, would you rather have TWO of my Tucson's, one for you and one for the wife, AND enough money left over to run them for over 5 years (the warranty period on a Hyundai) including TAX, Insurance AND servicing or would you rather have ONE Volvo XC40, is it really that nice?? Funnily enough the ribbing stopped immediately.

That 550 will only hold it's debateable value if it is either not driven at all or at the very least sparingly and quite frankly I find that more than a little sad.

You quickly find yourself in the realm of the flipper/collector both of which I hold in the greatest contempt and at least one of them are about to get reamed.

Take Yaris GR's for example, collectors/flippers have been filling their boots for some time and it is abundantly clear the wheels have just come off the wagon. These are the same utterly contemptible kents that have been holding cars for ransom thereby preventing normalish punters from obtaining the car to enjoy. Kudos to the guys that have bought them to actually drive the wee pocket rockets :worship:

As with all things you pays your money and you makes your choice AND the point of my narrative for those of you still with me is there are a lot more buyers like me buying usable cars than there are collectors and it is my considered opinion that collectors are about to get very thin on the ground as only the very wealthiest of them will be able to stay in the game. That means that only the very special cars will be in demand, ultra low mileage and cleaner than a clean thing, and unfortunately that 550 just isn't special enough to warrant that kind of money to someone like me.

I think we tend to get confused on this site between car users and car collectors.  Most of us on here are users and so when we see a high priced potential collector car we think it is stupidly priced, but as it is aimed at a different profile of buyer.  There are some out there who chance their arm of moving a user car into a collector car category and if they are a commercial set up who can blame them for trying to maximise their profit.  They certainly should not be insulted or pilloried for doing so, it is their business and their livelihood.

Great example of this are the WD XR3i cabrio and R5 GT Turbo editions from the most recent series.  You could hardly give them away 20 years ago, but now with less than 200 of each left in the UK, the right enthusiast or collector will pay upwards of £10k for a good ones.  Rarity and condition are the main factors.  A favourite of mine, try finding a UK spec early (pre facelift 94 - 96) Impreza Turbo below £10k.  They were under £5k only a few years ago and are contemporaries of the Boxster.

I imaging most categories of car with any desirability go through this cycle we are with the 986 now, when are they just consumer durables and at what point do those that remain move into a different category, first the best or rare or limited edition examples appreciate, then the more average ones do because the best ones have been snapped up and only the real rotters are discarded.

@EXY I salute you, you found that chip on my shoulder 🤣 the 550 is not as special as owners would have you believe. It’s a nice car but it’s an ‘extra’ edition of a mass produced car. But like a Ford Focus and it ST derivative.

By the way it’s a freedom of speech thing that and we shouldn’t be insulted for our personal opinions either, however wrong we may or may not proven to be in due course 😁

There are some things that I don’t think anyone should be insulted for, generally the things that people have no choice in and cannot change, like gender, skin colour etc, where insults are just mindless discrimination.

But personal opinion should always be open to criticism as you’ve made a conscious, free-willed choice, and voiced it on a public forum. If you really don’t want to run the risk that someone may insult you then the only way is to keep your opinions to yourself. That’s the dilemma of true free speech.

You’re not wrong I guess, maybe next I won’t be so ‘gentle’ with my opinion and turn to derogatory remarks like other members then 😁. I know the car salesman is a very highly regarded and respected member on here. Although my comment was made in jest I can see how he could and did take it the wrong way being a 550 owner himself.

woohoo let the floodgates open you bunch of dirty lowlife 550 owning snowflakes 🤣🤣🤣

(For clarity, as it seems written word is easily misinterpreted the above comment was a joke) and

Merry Christmas 🎅🏻

Actually these days people get upset on someone else’s behalf when the person who they’re getting upset for couldn’t give a monkeys.  I’m of the opinion that speaking your mind is far better than saying nothing however delivery is all important. I spent the whole of my life using this doctrine and I can honestly say that I’ve offended very few………. I think 😉

I look on the Boxster 550 in the same way as the Cortina Crusader (same goes for a 987.1 SE or 987.2 Black Edition).  An end of line model with the accessory book thrown at it, just to sell the last few cars before the new model is released.  I'd have one, but I'd be comparing it against the newer replacement for value for money.

They're only limited by either the number of shells they need to sell, or how many they think the market can stand.

As a 550 owner the meaning of the price when I bought one was whether it was affordable and represented value to me. It wasn't that much more than a regular S. Those who think it's like a GT3 are deluded but it is limited run and differentiated from other 986. Whether that means anything to a buyer is another question! I think just by being a limited run special edition and having a higher spec than nearly all other 986 warrants a premium. Not sure for me it's multiples of a 986S though. I'm not an investor in cars at least, so don't particularly care for the price but just like my house always monitor the price and likely exit option as there will always be something else to buy and what you buy depends on how much money you have! As it happens I don't drive my car much these last couple of years out of circumstance more than choice but bought it to drive and enjoy rather than polish and resell. In fact I somewhat on purpose bought a higher mileage one having already had an S with half the mileage.

I'm not sure beinga derivative of a mass produced car has much to do with it. £57000 for a Mk2 Escort RS 2000 recently.

Hold my beer,,,,,,,,,

https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/1999-subaru-impreza-sti-22b

I honestly believe that prices like these will be few and far between in the not so distant future.

ALSO the 550 in question within this thread has 52,000 miles, that's FIFTY TWO THOUSAND, factory fresh and pampered (sketchy SH Allegedly) it most certainly is not, still a nice car but please do not drink the cool aid.

To be fair, the 22B was a pretty special edition clear limited in numbers with more power and a number of specific features, plus very few came to the UK and it has always commanded a significant premium.  But at 5,660 miles it has clearly neve been used as such and is a collector car as I describe above.

As you note the 550 that started this topic is far from what would be described as a collector car, merely a slightly more desirable version of a 986S that has been used.

An old Impreza that hasn’t been ragged to within an inch of its life is very rare thing indeed. I knew I shouldn’t have sold my blobeye 😞

I did give some thought, yes yes I know that would be a first, to whether or not to take umbrage at being called an 'utter imbecile' and an 'offensive racist' however lets look a little closer,,,,

1. Would calling me an 'imbecile' not suffice. Why embellish it with 'utter' would complete not have been more appropriate, unless the inference is that I talk to myself when being imbecilic.

2. Likewise why call me an 'offensive racist', is there a form of racism that is inoffensive

I also had listed a few previous quotes from older threads but removed them as poor ole Araf has enough to do what with all those chimneys he has to clamber into and out of tonight.

So I will add this for anyone wondering where Ole Troop's animosity emanates from,,,

Conduct a search for 'porkies' and take a dekko at the first and third threads of the thirteen threads returned. I think I can safely say I didn't call anyone any names, at least not without proof. I find those two threads hilarious but then I am but an imbecile at heart

IMHO the only way that Scooby-Doo would be worth £250,502 is if there was £235,000 in the boot, others might think differently in which case I will revert to the sage and wise words of @r1flyguy,,,,

@EXY your an imbecile

Actually if you look at the logic you applied above, I’m the imbecile 🤣

August 21’ I ordered a new Macan MY23 GTS, threw all the options at it I wanted and yes it cost a little more than your Tuscon…. Will it do anything better than your car, fractionally, maybe the pace, will it cost double to service it, VEL it, insure it, run it…. Undoubtedly yes… so yes I’m a fool who parted with his money in September this year!!!!

Now guess what we went to look at as a replacement for the wife’s 1 series… yes a Tuscon 😁

Well I own a super rare, one off, really unique, single year 986 with more power, more engines, bigger pistons, funny seats, a bonkers shifter and big yellow lights on the front.

Every single panel has been artisan patina’d.

The brake calipers are custom hot road salt finished and there’s no “standing around corrosion” on the disks.

If I get Timpsons to engrave a big dog tag with:

“Boxster RSR 1 of 1”

and stick it on the dashboard how much do you think it’ll be worth?

To a collector obvs.
