Dad was big into trials when I was a sprog he at a younger age rode for Colin Appleyards & then for John Lampkin Beta down in the village. I wasn't great on the Moto but picked up the bike trials very quickly and got hooked.

That's now sprouted my little collection of Retro Monty & Montessa cyclo trials bikes (all resto).

Didn't even know that was a thing :)

Not been around on here much in the last 12 months, been using the bike more than the car when the weather has been good, training for another London to Paris which 7 of us did in July 2022.

It all started 48 years ago when I was 7, dad brought me a Matchbox 917 back and since then I loved the cars and the brand/history etc.
Whilst as a teenager my friends had posters of the latest Ferrari or Lambo up on their bedroom walls (or that one of the female tennis player approaching the net and readjusting her sportswear!), for me it was only ever Porsche (or F1).

Almost bought a ‘74 911 when I was 20 - right in the midst of the hot-hatch/cossie TWOC-ing era so could (just about) afford the car at £6k, but insurance was around £15k!!

6 years later, a gorgeous 944 S2 was for sale locally, history and mileage were spot-on - homework first so it was “insurable”!, but at the time we’d not long since had my son, plus wife a the time didn’t drive, so wasn’t going to be too sensible as an only car.

2nd wife hired me a Boxster for 3 days for my 40th (unlimited mileage too!), and reaffirmed my love for the brand - only the 2nd time I’d actually driven a Porsche!

So, “many years later” In 2015 on my usual bi-annual road-trip to Frankfurt motor show, me and a mate added another day into the schedule and drove the few hours further down to Stuttgart and visited the museum & factory. Kids in a sweet shop!!

March 2016 and me and Mrs B 3rd got invited to the 718 launch. Wasn’t that fussed about going along, since I felt I’d got as close as I was going to get to ever having one, but my wife persuaded me - she’d just started her own business and with suggestions of “if it takes-off etc”, we went along. By then, I’d read all about the heresy of moving to forced induction and losing 2 cylinders, but went with a more open mind. Test drives were booked for a few weeks later, and again, my open mind was “you won’t miss what you never had” re the turbo’s 4 vs flat 6.
Loved the car dynamically. Being a typical bloke, I’d already spent hours on the configurator and gone trigger-happy with the options “might be the first and only porsche I have!!”. The finance figures were pretty-much spot-on where I needed them to be.
Decided to just step back and think - despite much protesting from the missus, wanting me to sign there and then for my dream car. Big decision and all that, wanted to be sure it was right.
Later that week, my son had 3 seizures [with no history of them prior] and rushed into hospital, diagnosed with a rare brain tumour. Surgery, radiotherapy and chemo followed during 2016, and with changed priorities, I put the car order on hold of course.
End of 2016 with Adam’s health stabilised and him on the verge to returning to work (albeit in a different role due to having to surrender his licence temporarily, which was a real bind as he was even more of a petrol-head than me!), and he and I already due to go to Stuttgart and Frankfurt in Sept 2017, I started to look again, but in those intervening months since the 718 launch and worrying about Adam’s health, I’d subconsciously decided to look for a good-spec 981S. Not much doing for a few months - every one I enquired about had sold or deposit taken.
Feb 2017, and 2 981 GTS’ popped up in Swindon OPC. My preferred colour choice (agate with red roof) was one of them, and that was the PDK which I wanted too!
Being GTS, the budget I’d set was immediately cast-aside to the tune of a further 15k!!, but the previous year had proven life really is too short, and me and Adam would be going to Stuttgart in something tastier than my company car!!
Thinking was even if I’ve got to sell it soon after that road-trip, then so be it. There’s a story behind collection day too - took Adam and he didn’t know I’d bought it or why we called-in to Porsche Swindon, the look on his face was priceless.
This GTS is the source of many happy memories for sure.

This led to a TVR 350i convertible with the V8 Rover Vitesse engine, which was always getting me into trouble with the local Plod due to it's noisy exhaust. What a car though, a beast to drive and it never let me down.

I've owned various cars over the years including Dolly Sprint, TR7, Lancia coupe, Mk2 XR2 with Turbo Technics conversion plus a TVR 350i FHC for 5 years.

The idea of the TVR was a car that wouldn't rot, made from cheap parts and easy to maintain. I have to say, although my TVR never let me down, it was the worst engineered car I ever owned and it was never really that great to drive. Sold it 20 years ago and bought a Stag that I still own today.

Back to how I ended up buying a Porsche. My Audi S3 was coming up to 5 years old, I didn't like the new S3 and I was considering a TTS. Porches were never really on the radar for me but with kids off our hands and having a second car, a Base Cayman with a few extras comes in at a similar price to the TTS, and the Cayman suffers lower depreciation and a bit more special.

A lot of money to spend if I didn't like it and knowing little about Porsches, I bought a Boxster that I could easily sell on if I didn't gel with it. I went for a later 987.1 - Cheap, larger IMS bearing and unlikely to suffer bore score. Very slow compared to the S3 but love the way it feels and how engaging it is to drive. Decision made, New Cayman.

I visited the dealer, tried a Base 718 Cayman expecting similar power, turbo torque, the best of the S3 and Boxster all in one car but - no. Driving the 718 Cayman was less satisfying than the 987 Boxster and felt more like the S3.  Then there was availability. Loooong waiting list and no idea of a build date.

I ended refreshing the S3 with an uprated clutch plus stage 1 tune turning it into an absolute beast and keeping the Boxster because of it's driving dynamics and feel of the thing.

I'll try the Cayman EV if Porsche ever get around to building and selling it.

Stag owner says TVR is worse engineered.

That will ruffle some feathers!

I've mentioned before, my Stag was a wonderful car as long as I didn't drive further than 42 miles. On the 43rd mile it overheated & my return journey was made on the back of an AA recovery vehicle. It was yellow, so always looked like part of a set as it was relayed home. Owning a Stag gave me an early experience of range anxiety.

Controversial perhaps but I can only refer to my experience of the two.

The Stag has never let me down either, driven it many thousands of miles and I know which is the better drive and ownership experience. It wasn't the TVR.

I bought the Stag as an abandoned resto project for peanuts, and the only thing I've ever paid anyone to do is re-bore the block and spray the body with 2 pack. Great car to waft around countryside in soft compliant comfort with a far more tuneful V8 burble than the TVR ever produced.

Wafting & burbling both remembered fondly forever. Never got the same pleasure until I bought an SL500.

I feel a gratuitous moody photo of us in the Stag could be in order. This one shows that Stags can be driven without overheating, without the engine blowing up and the bonnet isn't always open.

Such a beautiful car. Mine was '76 vintage. I owned it in '79. It was true love but she broke my heart & my bank.

A bit dull really...

Talbot Samba > Peugeot 205 > Austin Maestro > Daihatsu Charade Turbo > Peugeot 205 > Ford Escort > Rover 400 > Ford Focus > Ford Focus > Ford Focus > Mini Cooper > Mini Cooper > Mini Countryman > Volvo V40 > Porsche 987 > Porsche 981 > ?

Always wanted a Mexico and an Aston, never drove either until after owning a Porsche and the comparison has put me right off both. Yeah, I know they're different beasts, but smiles per gallon and all that.

981 will be going soon due to me getting old... 😟

i'm basically in a porsche because i needed a second fun car, and i wanted to try something mid engined, with a flat 6, and with a porsche badge on the front lol. so... had a be a cheap boxster! found a nice low miles, but cat N 986S for £6k, thought i'd give it a whirl, see if i liked it.

turns out i like the idea, but not the specific car. hence why i'll be swapping to a 987 soon.

have pretty much always had sports cars of some description - been through an NB MX5, Nissan 300ZX, Nissan 350Z and a BMW Z4. after the boxster i really want to get into an Audi R8, YOLO and all that. I lost my mum when i was 30, and someone at work in her late 20s was literally hit by a bus and died. then someone else at work last year had a heart attack and died, he was mid forties... Life is short, if you want something and have the means to do it, then get it done.

Was going through a period of bangernomics for 15-20 years, buying cars under £1000 & punting them on or scrapping when repairs might prove hefty.

As a kid, I'd always admired 2 seater rag tops, MG Midgets, MGB Roadsters, Triumph Spitfires, etc., but once I was of age, cost, insurance, cost of running/restoring were always prohibitive. Approaching 50, I worked out I could finally have that 2 seater ragtop. I looked at MX5s, but something drew me to the MR2 Mk3. Bought one, loved it, cherished it over 6 years, tinkered with it, joined a club, made it better with bracing & new suspension. Put a 2zz in it, drove it into a hedge 🤣.

About that time our office shut down & for some reason the directors liked me & gave me more of a pay-off than they needed to. Test drove a couple of S2000's as potential replacement/upgrade for the MR2. Then tested a 987 & once round a roundabout I was pretty much sold. Lovely car. Owned it 3 years now but dog means it'll be sold this year once the sun comes out.

Growing up I was not interested in cars at all, from 15 to 22 motorbikes were an absolute passion. Having expensive tastes even back then, FS1E's, AP50's and SS50's , meant nothing to me. I originally lusted after the AJW Wolfhound, but in the true spirit of 1970s British managerial incompetence, they went bankrupt before I could buy one.

Enter a new Fantic Caballero and a love for Italian bikes they has stayed with me to this day. Moving up from the 50cc Fantic was going to be tricky if I just bought Italian (more expensive, less available than Jap stuff) so the next was a Yamaha RD200 which, being a two stroke with rather more power than I had been used to, was a hoot to ride (think turbo like power bands) but was pretty awful in terms of handling (not helped by the rear tyre being flat at the bottom, (wtf where Avon thinking when they made that?)

That was followed by a Morini 350 Sport (probably the best handing bike ever, but under powered), then a brand new Ducati 900SS (the bike I should have kept, but I was still only 18 with 40 years of mortgage hell in front of me). After the Duke it went downhill as we started saving for a house, a Honda 400N, Kawasaki Z650.

This is where it starts to get really bad, I have seen some claims of tragic car history in the previous stories, sorry, you're all amateurs, I had a Reliant Robin followed by an Austin Allegro, also latterly a Zafira and possibly worst of all a Nissan Note. High point in my 20s was a Lancia Beta Coupe that I loved but which (in the true spirit of 70s Italian managerial incompetence) had something which no other manufacturer had thought of doing. You see in with the usual constituents that go in to making steel had been added an active ingredient that possessed a symbiotic relationship with the car to the detriment and ultimate destruction of said vehicle. Yep, this will shock you, it rusted.

Anyway, there followed a move to Ireland (a country that despite its total dependence on the motor car seems to have a detestation for it) and the usual string of woeful family boredommobiles, whilst I had a van for work Then one day I saw a Honda Beat parked on a driveway with a for sale sign on it. It was ridiculously small but perfectly formed, I had to have it and so with my usual legendary negotiating skills, I bartered my way up to to a ridiculously over inflated price. It was a hoot to drive, but re defined the word "impractical", I lost the rear end (the cars, not mine) one day and re adjusted the suspension as a result. After that it would not pass the NCT (MOT equivalent) without significant cash injection, as I was now a family man with zero disposable income, it sat on my driveway until someone offered me very little money to take it away, which, being the business genius I am (not) I gratefully accepted, knocking off a few more quid and giving him a full tank of gas most likely.

So, go forward a few years, some family members have regrettably gone the way of my Lancia and as result, I have some disposable cash. My mortgage gets paid off, a new 30 x 18 garage gets built and I can start thinking about cars I would like again. Now before I tell you what I bought and you judge me, please remember, this is Ireland, to run anything really nice here you need to have family land, be a professional (lawyer, doctor dentist that sort of league), a good businessman (I think you get the picture on that score),or a bast.... sorry politician, the latter basically means you also qualify on at least one of the other criteria anyway.

Ok, I knew that Cortinas and the ilk where not for me so I decided a Porsche 924 was a good starter classic that I could actually live with, cheap to run and maintain (despite it not being  van engine as previously mentioned, it was an engine so robust it eventually got used in a van, there's a difference, not that 924 owners are touchy about it) Browsing the UK car sales websites I found a car that advertised a high priced car that was "immaculate", this was what I wanted, something that need nowt doing, I could put it in my shiny new garage, get in it the odd weekend, it would start immediately and I would have fun and larks on the wonderful roads that the west coast of Ireland has to offer.

So, jumped on one of O'Learys finest and headed to the closest airport to the purveyor of top quality motor vehicles and retailer of said "immaculate" 924. Optimism as yet undiminished, I made my way to the taxi rank, gave the cheery driver the address and nearly collapsed when he told me the distance and the price, hey can;t quit now, ok lets go.

The car dealer was a little more shabby than I anticipated and the salesman seemed to have a remarkable lack of any education of any sort and was specifically absent on the days when when the meaning of the word "immaculate" was discussed. It was definitely some sort of religious holiday the week teacher covered the woeful undervaluing of the Porsche 924, (an auto at that). I remember he was looking for £2995, which at that time, would have bought a pristine example, particularly of the 2 litre auto, so the fact that this had the boot spoiler glued on (it was an early model which shouldn't have one), wouldn't start and when it did the windows refused to budge, meant it was a bargain, I had to have it immediately! No not really, even I am not that dumb.

I had a dilemma, the taxi was going to cost another £100 back to the airport, I had no flight booked and O'Leary particularly punishes last minute bookers, fek it, let's see if we can inject some realism into this t*ssp*t. So £1600 later, I am negotiating the multiple toll booths between England and Ireland with now working windows. In fairness, windows fixed, the 924 was |(and still is) in really good condition, so maybe, for once I got it sort of ok.

This has gone on way too long, I have visions of the scene in "Airplane" where people are hanging themselves,. Anyway, I return to the UK to run my business, get bored, buy two Ducatis, move up north, buy a 986 meet some total t*ssp*ts via Loz, scare myself silly most weekends and generally have the most wonderful time. Spend lots on the 986 as there is so much scope for improvement, sell it in 2022 in Ireland, it must become the most expensive 986 sold that year as it costs the new owner €17500 in total to clear it in Ireland (a few grand in penalties there for late declaration).

One of said t*ssp*ts knows I want a 987.2S (having thought about a 911) and lets me know of one for sale in Bellfast, Good spec, one owner, lowish mileage (just right for its age IMO), full Porsche history etc.. Its Easter Thursday and I am in Galway, I ring the dealer and arrange to look the following Tuesday. Multiple buses later I arrive at a Kia garage and find out previous owner was a 70 year old barrister who could no longer elegantly enter or exit the Boxster, it is about £2.5k under a specialist dealer price and they are going to put P zeros on it as existing rubber is low, NOOOOOOOOOO says I, give me a deal to take it now as seen, they do and I get it for about £3.5k lower than silly Buttercup prices. I drive it back across country to the Republic and later back to the UK.

In December I sold the business and moved home to Ireland, because I had owned the car in the UK for over 6 months and been resident outside Ireland for over 2 years, I got transfer of residence exemption on VRT and VAT which has saved me a small fortune. I hope this car is a keeper, but the road tax is €1200 per year and insurance is no bargain either, it could have been worse, the 986 would be €2200 in road tax.

I don't blame anyone who gave up on this story hours ago, however,I take no responsibility for any medical bills arising from having read it all.

Like @Terryg bikes were my first love, still are actually. Started at 16 with a Yamaha RS125 that I couldn’t ride legally till 17, had to sell my pool table to buy it as still at school and parents said had to be self financed. (Looking back, probably because they were skint at the time) Sold after an off on a diesel spill resulting in a broken wrist. Bought a Honda H100s at 21 for work commute, followed by a Suzuki GS250 custom, Yamaha FZ600, bit of a break then a Honda VF400, Yamaha SZR660, Kawasaki ZZR 600, Triumph Sprint RS, Kawasaki ZX10r Ninja and currently my BMW S1000R Sport (Best of them all)

I'm warbling like Terry here, totally digressed. Like most my first memory of Porsche was a 911, whale tail. My then gf and I both agreed we would buy one in later years when prices came down. How naive was I in thinking prices would come down or that a could keep a gf.

An off on the FZ600 at 6am going to work in the middle of winter, came round a corner to a sheet of ice from a burst water pipe, put me into my 1st car.

My dad was a petrol head, cars and bikes but bikes before I was born, and he always had something a bit nicer than the average saloon. My first car was a Vauxhall Cavalier sri, utter heap of shyate, had my trousers down and spanked on that one. Next was a Peugeot 309 sri, handled brilliantly but sold after the electrics came close to causing a fire in the fuel tank.

Next was a MK1 MR2, probably still my most fondly remembered car for around 10 years. Father passed, mother had stroke so myself and ex wife moved closer to my mother and the MR2 went for a Honda Prelude. Mother passed a couple of years later so Prelude was traded for a MK3 MR2 roadster. Ran that for a few years then traded it for a delivery mileage facelift model.

Ran the two MK3's for around 9 years, got divorced in between so money was very tight for a while. Redundancy and 6 months not being able to pay my bills without dipping into redundancy money followed, then got my previous job with a decent salary and was able to think about changing cars again.

Met the boss, ran the MR2 roadster for another year or two, then bought a Toyota GT86 Aero.

Not done a word count yet, but determined to beat Terry. 😀

Chance conversation at work with a Colleague re pensions as I was approaching my 55th birthday led to an appointment with an IFA. Long story short, took my 25% tax free at 55 and realised that I was in a position to buy a Porsche. Like as already been mentioned, some deaths of family and friends, including a mate from the pub who died early 30's, gave me the mindset of do it now whilst you can.  As I'd never had a brand new, unregistered car before this ruled out a 911 and my intention was to buy a Cayman. Schoolboy error, took Lynn with me, first car as we go into the OPC was a Boxster and I was promptly informed we were "getting one of those."

For those still awake at this point, may I suggest reading "Spare", a modern day fairytale of a wonderful prince being badly treated by their family before finding true narcissism with a selfless woman with the magical ability to change hue on different continents.

So, back to the OPC. Test drive of the 718 was arranged. We also looked at 981's but my prerequisite was for my first ever new car so I decided if I didn’t like the 718 I would look at he 981's and older 911's.

Test drove the 718, loved it, so decision was made. Had a few months before cash would be available so was on the configurator and all the OPC websites to see what was available.

Configurator should be fun, right? Not when your budget is £50k and base price is over £47k. Lynn's stipulation was heated seats, after that I was free to blow the rest. Doesn’t get you much.

OPC at Wilmslow had a pre reg car in budget with a better spec than I could configure, so realistically had to consider it even knowing I would not be the first owner. We were heading to Barbados from Manchester anyway in a couple of weeks so contact was made and an appointment to view/test drive arranged.

Wake up at the back please!

Call from Glasgow OPC, they had just taken delivery of two unregistered 718's, come in for a chat. Phone down, day off, immediately head in. One in white, one in my first choice of Sapphire blue (First choice for any Celtic supporter surely?) No brainer, except the white one was in budget, the Sapphire blue was £4k over budget.

Negotiations start, originally they do not go well for the boy Black. No discount. Pushed towards the white car, tell them I'd rather either spec my own in Sapphire blue or buy the pre registered car at Wilmslow, also in Sapphire blue. I'm trading in the GT86 and what both OPC's are offering are the same, also good enough offers that it's not worth the hassle of selling privately.

The other problem is they want the deal done by end of the month, before my funds become available. Salesman gets Finance manager involved and negotiations now start properly. Have whatsapp conversation on phone from Wilmslow OPC and the deal negotiated on their car. Happily show this to the two guys, who suddenly look rather glum. Tell them politely I have no interest in the white car, but will do a deal on the Sapphire blue. If we can't reach agreement then it will be Wilmslows car, or I spec my own.

Brief chat between the sales and finance guy, out of earshot. Back they come, finance guy gives me a proposal on the Sapphire blue and sales guy looks very unhappy. Deal is they will do it for the same price as the white car, but reiterates must be done by end of month. Second part of proposition is I take PCP out, pay first months payment, then pay it off using my money as it will then be available. Myself and finance guy work out the cost to me to do this and it's deducted from the now agreed price on the Sapphire blue.

We agree to meet next day, I want overnight to think on it, talk to the boss and double check everything, even though I know I'm taking his deal. Back in next day, happy to sign. Finance guy goes upstairs to get paperwork prepared, sales guy waits till he's gone and quietly tells me in his opinion finance manager has overstepped his authority and he does not think deal will be approved. Finance guy comes back beaming, deal approved and I sign.😀

Postscript to sale, make one PCP payment and request a settlement figure. This comes in a few hundred more than finance guy and I worked out. Quick call to him, he immediately honours the deal and cheque sent out to cover the difference.

Had the car just under 3 years, then the opportunity to buy a holiday home in Barbados came up. this would necessitate selling the 718. Much as I loved it, i was not being used as intended.  Once every four shifts for work and the odd run with Lynn who hates speed in bends. If I was wanting fun solo, it was the bike every time. There were a couple of other reasons for making the decision to sell, so the car went back to Glasgow after they matched the best offer I'd had from OPC'S and Indy's.

Unfortunately, or fortunately as it turned out due to Buttercup, we did not get the place in Barbados we bid on and those plans are on hold, possibly indefinitely .

Used the DD corsa for around 6 months then knowing we would not be purchasing abroad anytime soon, and knowing my commute was about to shorten drastically, we sold that and got back into something nice again.

But that's another story............

I'd have another 2CV in a heartbeat.

My wife has a 2CV for her summer fun car, she loves it, I think it's the devil's spawn.

🤣 TBF I only read from the MR2s

Mmmm, MR2 - I had the T-Bar model years ago, a bloody brilliant car in it's day, and would probably still hold it's own against modern cars today:

100_1761

I remember when I sold it, the guy turned up at my house and he had to duck to get through the door, so I reckon he must have been at least 6'8" tall.  He was chuffed to bits with the car, but he looked ridiculous as he squeezed himself behind the wheel, and drove off with his knees up around his chest

I also had an RX-8 that was brilliant - right up to the point when the engine went bang! :(
