My 2011 987 Black Edition

Thats fine, all I say is that I never ever had PASM on Sport mode on my 981 GTS as it was scarily harsh on raoad use. The 987 was if anything even worse, I rememer pressing the button on the test drive stating to the salesman "lets give Sport PASM a go...................yep that won;t be getting used" within 100 yrds of use lol

If you like it great, you dont need the DSC and can save yourself c£1k, happy days. For me its given me a much more useable car on the road and so is well worth it.

Actually thinking about it some more.........I do not know anyone who likes OEM PASM Sport in road use and I must know 20 people currently with it personally. You would have to be into uncomfortable rides for some bizar reason, I just do not understand how you can use it other than to simply state that you do. Yes if your "on it" where ultimate handling is required but even then it upsets the car boucning all over the place as much as it adds, it just make the car "skittish" so I really have to ask why anyone would use it on road use ie they are simply not driving fast enough on the roads that would in theory benefit from it to notice its real shortcomings ?

PASM is great, its gives the car a much better "stance" and normal "adaptive" mode is great. DSC is even better as you can fine tune normal mode and it is even more adaptive AND sport moe is viable / enjoyable / adds rather than detracts to road use.

hmm, I hear what you are saying.  There are certainly  a very varied level of driving abilities/experience within any forum., although few would admit they are nothing less than a driving god. 🤣

I know I would use sports more than most, but then I tend to progress down the road more than I potter.  I know Ian @T24RES  uses the setting too.  We have enjoyed a few good "blaps" out, that might well prove uncomfortable for most.

Perhaps alignment has more input here as you can dial a lot of your concerns out with a full set up.

These cars seem very reliant, more than most I've experience,  to a good set up.  It's worth paying the extra for someone to get the measurements the same, rather than "within tolerance"

I also found adding 5 mm spacers all round made a noticeable change to fast cornering stability.  I can't believe it changes the camber by much - but it's a positive improvement.

Food for thought, but great feedback on the DSC

Thanks for the feedback, it’s a mod I’m seriously considering but I’d also need the 3-axis add on as mines a 987.1 - part of me also thinks that by adding the extra control it will yield a greater improvement with how ‘active’ the PASM will become. Ideally a setting that is firmer than normal but not as hard as sport would be perfect...

(Geo was set by CPS last month along with a front PASM refresh)

The default DSC setup is harder softer and softer sport than OEM PASM. Most are happy with that but my main local roads are not great at the moment (lots of redevelopment work in the pipeline for Liverpool so they are not maintaining roads) so I figured out how to dial the normal setting back towards OEM. It is worth noting that statement is misleading if your not used to adaptive suspension ie it just means its softer in “normal” driving but as soon as its required to it still stiffens / adapts to requirements even without adjusting the PASM setting.

I agree the DSC module is fantastic and really does make a noticeable improvement in your PASM suspension. I hardly ever use normal mode , Sport every where I go. It makes the car ride as you would of expected from the factory, two fully usable modes with Sports being firmer but still perfectly compliant to use on normal roads.

I was lucky enough to pick up a second hand unit for £700 which is a good saving over the new price but still enough to pay😂 But after using it for a while I can confirm it is worth the new price for the difference it makes and actually being able to use your suspension settings 👍

Well, I’ve just ordered the DSC v1 module and the additional 3-axis accelerometer... I’m hoping for a great transformation in the PASM once it’s fitted!

Being impatient I’ve ordered a new kit from nine excellence, well done to you both on sourcing second hand you’ve got a great saving!

So after a great 3 months getting to know the car and tinkering its that time of year to wrap it up for winter

- cleaned
- fueled
- tyres over inflated
- secure dry storage
- battery conditioner connected
- dust cover fitted

= job done and car can be left for the next 6 months........roll on April

I have a prime spot in a secure underground car park we own in the City Centre (its under my office and next to where I park my daily), its well lit, large, out of the way, has an airflow fan over it, CCTV coverage, 24/7 concierge service (who work for me), pest control and a power point ie just about as good a car storage location as you can get....

It has been great value for money and to those who will decry storage over winter I need to do this to retain interest in the car, I learned a long time ago I get bored of cars very quickly, I have to make them my own by investing time in them and use them infrequently to retain my interest. I have other cars to play with that are more suited to winter use but will look forward to getting this car back on the road next year for some more fun  :thumb:

My plan is to get the 993 back on the road (ie tax it lol) next week and use that before the winter really sets in 😎

I mean fully fueled

Modern fuel does not degrade like old fuel especially over 6 months but I work on the principle the less air in the tank the better plus fuel only goes up in price over 6 months 😉

I had chance today to fit the OEM 987 Carbon Centre Console........

It was more striaghtforward than I had envisaged and was simply a matter of:

- swapping over the arm rest (simply screws in)

- multimedia input interface (located under the armrest). The new console was from a none multimedia interface 987 so located under the armrest was a 12v accessory socket. The harness for the multimedia interface simply uses the hole for the accessory socket but that meant the 12v accessory point needed to be removed.......impossible lol. I found a few videos / guides on google but I could just not get at the tabs needed to remove the socket.........so it was sacrificed and a simply "dremeled" it out. That was easy and did not mark the console or hole at all   :thumb: The multimedia interface was then just plug and play.

- tracker. The original Cobra tracker is located under the centre console. This is no longer used but to be "belt and braces" I swapped over the tracker box from the original console to the carbon console

- Roof open / close switch. My main concern was that the carbon console has a 987.1 switch. This is considerably smaller / simpler than the 987.2 switch ie it is just a rocker switch whereas the .2 has seperate open/close switches. The bad news was the the switch does require a much larger hole in the console to fit   That could work with a dremel to enlarge the whole but.....I prefer the smaller/neater rocker switch from the .1 car. So I checked the wiring connector and it is identical. The end result is that conversion from the .2 switch to the .1 switch is just plug and play ie a lot simpler to just use the old switch which I actually prefer. As a bonus the switch is less prone to dust / debris collection than the .2 version which is a bit of a dust trap  :thumb:

So with prep work done it was simply a matter of fitting the carbon console as per normal, it was literally then just plug and play.......

At the same time I had decided to do something about the Sport Chrono clock pod, the leather on this (if it is leather) is not the same as the leather on the dashboard (my car has the full leather option) and so I decided to get a carbon replacement. The problem being that Porsche (so far as I can establish) does not offer a carbon sport chrono pod for the 987. Fortunately there are aftermarket alternatives so I sourced one of those. Fitting is very easy as the pod just leavers off with a trim tool (its retained by x4 spring clips), unplug the electrical connector and swap over the clock which is retained via a bracket and x4 screws.......

the Cobra tracker module sits in its own cradle under the centre console....

One decision I have is that the OEM centre console does not come with a carbon trim for access under the handbrake lever, this is not missing, it does not exist OEM and so you use the original black plastic trim piece. I think this looks OK but there is an aftermarket carbon trim you can buy. The problem is its c£130   :o ........I'll have a think about it 😁

So job done, there are a couple of black plastic door trims I would like to replace with carbon items but they are not cheap so ebay is my friend  :thumb:

I'm very pleased with the end result and how its coming together, just need some sun now

The weave looks so different on the gear stick and chrono surround it looks odd , i had the same with some of the stuff for my bike , ended on buying the proper stuff.

It’s my favourite 911 shape bar none, that’s why its a keeper. Just looks more and more classic as it gets older and the newer cars become larger and larger. Those hips, you just can’t replicate those proportions with a modern car !

Its funny I’ve been driving a combo of various sports autos and the manual Boxster with short shift and I totally forgot how the 993 gear change felt, it felt even more unique with the floor mounted clutch pedal and longer throw, so slick .......and the feeling of the aircooled engine, even sat in traffic you can literally feel it rumbling behind you, they are such a unique experience to drive....... the modern 911’s are so remote an experience in comparison (bar the GT3 RS’s but they are not necessarily pleasant to drive at normal road speeds)

So having a black car (thats not a company car) has got me back into the detailing scene 😁 .......

Things have changed somewhat since back in the day :o but its good to see that Collinite 915 is still holding its own (my tin must be 15 years old :) ) but you have to be prepared to move with the times.....

So I have been experimenting this summer with pre wash soaks, no rinse additives and had just ordered some rinse top up waxes ......so far I have been very impressed and have actually enjoyed the research and testing......but one of the "next big things" has been using a hair dryer......we not quite but thats what I will be accused of   to dry the car without contact. One of the things I hate most about looking after a car is the drying and I'm still an old school leather man :o ......... the prpblem is that as with any newish "trend" its a moving feast of options but still relatively limited....so what have I learned.....

- people started using leaf blowers, the down side to these are they are not designed for the job, they are unwieldly, just suck in and blow out dust / debris and do not use heated air

- so then people cottoned onto pet dryers aimed at dog groomers. These seem to have formed the basis for the development of more specialist "car" dryers

- There are now a lot of choice of relativelyt cheap "car dryers" on the likes of ebay <£100 but these almost certainly are converted pet dryers rebadged (or not in some cases)

- the real specialist car dryers seem to have been developed in America where there is obviously a massive market for them

- these specialist dryers are imported by relatively few outlets in the UK, mainly detailing outlets

- the "go to choice" of the pros over the past 5 years or so has been the American "Master Blaster" range. These are also the most expensive.

So after all my research I narrowed down my criteria as follows:

- I wanted a specialist car dryer with air (debris) filter and warm air
- I wanted "professional" quality in terms of both output and build. Yes its overkill for my likely use but I always like to buy well and buy once 😉
- I wanted 8HP which is about as powerful as you can use on a domestic fuse board without being stupid. It also means dual motor which offers more flexibility.
- I wanted variable output which with dual motor usually means differing comboes of motor use
- I wanted long electrical cable as its not usually a good idea to use extension leads with high power requirements. Why do so many have short leads  :frustrated:
- I wanted a long hose so that at most I only have to move the blower unit a couple of times ie to each side of the car once and don't have to drag it around with me

The master Blaster was the benchmark but I was conscious it was c£430 (for the revolution 30ft hose version) and actually despite slight updates the design is a good few years old now. That is good as in its proven but also may mean that there are now better options so I wanted to challenge the likely / easy option.

Part of my research was actually talking to professional detailers who used the Master Blaster. The valid question is what would you change about them. The main feedback was the hose. It is "industrial" designed for tough use but it is relatively rigid and hard to manhandle. I was informed that the newer models on the block used more flexible but shorter hoses.

So my research based on units with the same / similar specs as the Master Blaster Revolution model lead me to .....the Blo Air-GT.......now it is only really stocked by one outlet in the UK (its an American product).....

https://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/blo-air-gt-car-dryer

They also stock the Master Blaster products so I thought I would discuss my options with them....... their view (and I accept this may be based on profit margins but they seemed genuine enough) was that the Blo Air products are better. They have used the GT model (there is a newer lower spec RS model) for c12 months themselves and have been supplying it to customers for a few months with great feedback and no problems. They confirmed that athe hose is only slightly shorter (28 v 30 feet) it is a lot more flexible to use.

So I did some further research but there is relatively little on the model as its so new. What I did establish from the specs which I like:

- its a relatively small unit for dual motor 8HP
- it has a 5m power cable built in
- the hose "expands" with use so despite its length its relatively easy to store
- it has infinately variable power outputs using a ritating dial from min to max v limited pre set choices which is the norm.
- it has x4 lockable wheels for ease of use
- the cost is not far off 50% of the Master Blaster revolution

The other dilemma I had was I've put the black 987 into winter storage so won't be cleaning it for 6 months  :wack: so sensible head said wait until over winter and there must be lots of discounts on cleaning products I can use .........but then I got bored 😁 ....but in my defence I was sensible and found a discount code for the supplier on "detailing world" which worked at "basket" level giving 5% off (hint: the code is DW05).....so that made my mind up, I pulled the trigger..........I ordered online using the discount code yesturday afternoon.........it was delivered before lunchtime today using their free "2-5 day" delivery service :o ........you can't ask for much more than that ie <24 hours from order :thumb: .....

So here we have it....

wUOWhaB.jpg

OaGkVVQ.jpg

unboxed, ready to "put together"....

rnFLa4T.jpg

First impressions are very good in terms of build quality, it just "feels" well made......"putting it together" consisted of twisting both ends of the hose into place so they lock and it was ready to rock...

PKEG7uv.jpg

nWYvzOR.jpg

I plugged it in, set the speed to min and pressed the on button, waited for the fuse to trip 😁 .......and it just worked. I ramped the speed up and its strong enough to require some force to hold in place......with a massive puff of dust in the garage.......so my first "test" run involved walking down the garage.....I would say blowing leaves out but what it actually did was blow every bit of dust out of their, I've never brushed it so well :o ....all from a standing position in about 1 minute  :thumb: .........of course that left a layer of said dust on the 993 which was parked outside the garage   .......no problem a quick (and I mean quick) "waft" of the hose and it all blew off like a startled rabbit......wow this thing is powerful and puts my Stihl professional leaf blower to shame ........

Turned it off and the hose miraculously shrank back down  :thumb: ....fitting snuggly next to the jet washer.......

UfTT6mG.jpg

So I have obviously not used it for its intended purpose yet but with the 993 on the road for autumn that will be my testbed in the coming weeks and I'll report back  :bandit:
