What have you done to your 981 today?

Not so much the 981 but, it was used as a delivery vehicle so I could have a repair carried out on the calipers of the Cayenne. They have seized bleed nipples but fixed by a brilliant man with a shed! Far better than the offer of new calipers from the OPC.

I used the Gunson Eezibleed system after refitting, have to say it was very good! Hook it up to a spare tyre and it pushes everything through the system. Per the Porsche guide you do need an assistant to pump the brakes to get everything out but very easy and no mess!

Ps - very easy to cross thread the calipers, no tools until they are well on their way because they are made of cheese.

I’ve just replaced all my bleed nipples (996 but all the same ish) (with oe brembos). Also did braided lines and front calliper hard lines (rear ones done earlier in year).

As a demo / warning of how manky the nipples can get over the years:

35-DB406-F-0-D94-4525-87-CD-B2143268-AF7

Some great advice on this thread, having fought with 20 yr old nipples (insert own joke here). And only patience / freeze spray  / heat saved me.

Just a word of caution on the gunson eezibleed (was thinking of a separate topic incase folks search?) mine let go on the last caliper - the hose from bottle to brake reservoir popped off / cue a high pressure (20psi max) fountain of brake fluid spraying up into underside of frunk lid / over the wings / headlights etc…. full panic - had some soapy / clay solution to hand / drenched it until I could wash it down a few minutes later….

battery and tray removal (as majority dripped onto bulkhead).. to wash it all away - thankfully seems fine!!  / guess the benefit of silicone fluid?

Just check the connections on an eezibleed well prior to use! (Or keep it in a bag when in use ‘just in case’. Occasionally peer in to check fluid level.

Great advice to move the nipples annually and protect the hardlines (I use bilt hamber  dynax uc) ie any winter prep is wise.

Good work, I found the threads so sensitive one wrong move and you are in a world of pain.

I can imagine many of these have been over torqued in the past so nipping them up is not an option at the dealer when they bleed the fluid and next time around they are well and truly seized.

Bad luck with the eezi bleed system that must have been frightening but mildly amusing for me reading it 🤣

Picked myself up a 718 GTS interior - my GTS had the Race-Tex delete option so it’s basically got an S leather interior. It was the biggest concern of my car when I bought it but with limited manual GTS available I conceded this as something I could resolve in due course.

revved up by these photos of nasty nipples, I decided to swap out the ones on my 2016 27,000 mile old Cayman GTS. HAving had a serciven including brake fluid change only 4 months ago by the OPC prior to purchase, it should have been a breeze.

I have a bag of 16 stainless steel nipples to fit. Front brakes - no problem. I use a small pair of mole grips to clamp the flexi hose so brake fluid does't leak out. Makes the job a lot less messy. You can but dedicate flexi hose clamps, but a small pair of moleys works fine, just done go mental on the tightness!

Rear calipers - outer nipples just fine, with some evidence of brake fluid remaining in the ribber dust boots, as you would expect from a previous bleed.

The two ineer ones, harder to get to, as you have to (SHock horror) take the wheel off to access.

Dry as a bone, crusty and of cousre sseized. I spent ages with GT70 spray lube gently back and forwards releasing and retightening until they came out.

See below for the result of 6 years of OPC servicing. It annoys me as you pay a lot of money for the vaunted OPC history and the techs disrespect your P&J and wallet by not doing what they are paid to do. Terrible really.

Very nice mate! You get a bargain?

Question I now have is to whether To sell my OEM parts which are all in great condition - will then potentially make it an amazing bargain.

That's always a good plan. I may be interested in your dash trims if they are aren't silver, pm me.

The centre pieces come out very easily you want to make them alcantara.

It's making me feel uneasy seeing that on the body work!

Yes they are awful and cross threaded by the look of it did the new nipples fit ok? You might find they seep when you apply the brake.

I was super careful with the new ones. I believe as long as the taper seat is a good match they won't leak.

They weren't cross threaded, just the bi metal corrosion had taken place. The shiny threaded section is where the alloy from the caliper has corroded to the steel nipple and basically torn the ally from the caliper. They seem to have tightened up OK, only needs 20NM torque. I coated all the new nipples with high temp silicone grease to ease installation. The other 6 nips went in very easily indeed.

Good stuff I see, you are perhaps fortunate that the beginning of the thread is ok and that's kept it in good shape for getting started when refitting the new ones.

Actually its the other way Daz. the outer end of the thread is where the ally has stripped from, it's the bottom of the thread, nearest the tapered base that has remained ok. IMHO, as long as there is sufficient pressure able to be exerted on the chamfer at the base of the nip/caliper to prevent the egress of fluid, then job done.

Fortunately, the new nip has able to be inserted past the upper stripped part of the caliper and engage with the lower third of the calipers thread.

I guess I'm fortunate that I was able to remove the nip without shearing it off in situ.

Note to everyone, check your nipples!

Might get involved with this repair kit:

Time sheets are good as long as the tip of the nipple meets the corresponding shape in the caliper correctly to make the seal. Even at PalmerSport with a fully equipped Motorsport and engineering workshop we used to send calipers to a specialist for any thread work for this reason.

Good point re the seating at the base of the caliper thread. This place looks to have the job cracked. Might take the calipers there and have them done by a pro. Looks like they can do them while I wait.

Wow, that will be nice when fitted, did you get the side trims to the console as well? On the 718 this part has the stitching I would like to add on my 981. 2(213).jpg

I have two in my garage waiting to go on. I've been busy making the stitching match my dash, hoping it looks ok as it doesn't tie up like on the 718.
