Scubaregs
Thinking about it, cars and ladies from 40 years ago have followed a similar path. Both are bigger and heavier now. Both cost a lot more to run and maintain. Both now have a lot more bling. Writing either off will lose you a lot more money now. I suppose the only difference really is that the cars have gotten quieter....... Edited December 6, 2023 by Scubaregs

My Pop was a British Leyland man, one uncle was a Hillman aficionado, another uncle swore by and sometimes at his Toyota's but my favourite uncle was a Porsche man. My point is none of them would tank you for a FORD let alone pay a premium for one. There is a lot of time dedicated on FB as to why the price differential but I'm unconvinced. I bet they start getting cheaper though with current events.

Could it be that proper ‘car’ people back in the day obsessed over cars and chose favourites, but the bulk of ordinary folk just bought bread and butter fords in large numbers thanks in part to the halo models giving them a bit of glamour, Rally Fords, Cosworths, XR models etc. Roll forward 30 years and lots of the ordinary folk have lots of money thanks to house prices etc and don’t really remember the other makes so much, but do remember admiring the halo models that they can now afford (until recently) and that just generates a bubble of valuation as there’s far more of these people than born and bred car enthusiasts.

I used to like my Fords: 3x Sierra XR4x4s in a row, then a Carlton GSi, then a 4WD Sierra Cosworth, then a Scooby WRX The Ford 4WD was superb compared to the Subaru, which had far too much understeer, the Fords would always tend to bit of useful oversteer if pushed really hard. Same here - my grandfather was a British Leyland man, my dad was a "anything but Ford" man, so i've never really got the fast ford of the 70's thing myself. My dad went through a weird period of getting Citroen BX's - luckily that didn't rub off either. I don't remember any of the family having anything posh or fast when i was a kid - probably why i struggle to settle on a car myself

I loved my grey '86 Fiesta XR2 but even when a thoroughly refurbished example showed up at the start of lock-down for £10k we baulked even though hindsight would suggest it was a fair bet. I just can't get my head around fekkin' eijits paying more than they cost new for normal everyday cars that were in no short supply back in the day. I also reckon there will be fewer eijits about and the Fast-Ford price premium bubble will deflate pro-rata.

I've done the Carlton GSi and Scooby thing too and also as a co-driver in Sapphire Cosworth 4x4 and Escort Cosworth rally cars. Ford 4x4 system was 33:67 f/r with the take off transfer box whereas Subaru was 50:50. I think Ford just has a wider and more passionate following for a volume brand than most others. Really a reflection of how good their marketing was and how well they pitched the halo models. Edited December 6, 2023 by ½cwt
andygo
My old man used to like his fords and used to compete. Favourite car was his pre production Mk1 Escort Twin Cam. straight out of Boreham. One of the first 50 test examples. Cost him £1140 back in 1968. God knows how much it would be worth nowadays, but it was a crowd puller back then. He had the first Mk2 RS200 north of Birmingham plus a further two examples. He had a brand new unreg one stored in the garage for 5 years before moving on to 3 door Cosworths. Those were the days. I had a couple of 3 door and a saphire cossie back in the day. I even used to rally an ex works Mk3 Escort RS1600i as well as competed in an official Ford series for the Mk5 RS200's in the early 90's. As far a a BL car, my wife was given a Marina 1.3 coupe by her Grandad when we first got married. Remembered with derision by her even today. Apart from it being incredibly rubbish, I do remember it needing a new exhaust which cost £7.67 which I thought at the time doubled the value of the car, even though it was only 5 years old! I'm a bit of a latecomer to Porsches - at least they are RWD, LOL. Edited December 6, 2023 by andygo
