one drive shaft needs replacing

ouch that's not good news.

Did they explain why? I assume the CV joint has got play in it? Are any of the rubber boots split that might lead to this failure or are they all good?

Is it  OPC or indy? By chance they aren't saying the whole driveshaft needs replacing just cos a boot has a split in it are they?

They look OEM almost especially with the matching red stitching.

My 981 S has full black leather so maybe re-trim in black leather is going a bit far but the Alcantara works for sure. I am looking for a phone mount and see you have one on your passenger vent. Any recommendations?

Hi, its a mag-safe holder/charger by ESR   esrgear.com

To be honest, the clamp grips the vent-slat well, and there’s an adjustable “leg” that helps support it all, but for me it still leaves 2 issues:- the grips on the vent slat are rubber-coated but it can still swing left/right a fraction, and over rougher surfaces the whole assembly can move upwards and back down (as the vent slats allow it).

I’ve put it into our Macan as my wife is a away this week, and she’s said it has been good in that car.
I don’t tend to use the mobile screen much in the Boxster anyway, though would have for Waze had this mount worked-out. Ironically we don’t really need it in the Macan, as that has car-play!

It’s probably the best I’ve come across, but still not perfect.

specifically:

  • Nail in O/S/R tyre – we should be able to remove and repair, it doesn’t look like it has gone all the way through
  • Rear discs on minimum and the brake pads touching sensors – warning light will come on imminently
  • N/S/R drive shaft is leaking gaitor grease – this would be an MOT failure, it will unfortunately require a driveshaft complete. It will eventually seize up and can in turn cause internal failure within the gearbox so really this does need addressing
  • Coolant cap threads damaged – it has been leaking and doesn’t not secure correctly in closed position

...might be ok but I don't want to chance it and generally trust them so nodded to get it done...I have a driving trip to Belgium due in September so decided better do it than not.

They called today to say the shaft needs to come from Germany so wont be here until early next week...consequently they are likely to have the car until at least mid next week :(

The Cayenne came back today at £622.95 cost, needs two rear tyres soon (cracked and on 4mm)

fs, where's the rum?

Thanks for reply. I dont think I will go a vent-slat job based on your findings. I am the same I rarely use screen when driving. Normally have my wife with me who uses her phone for directions etc etc. Enjoy top down weather! Cheers

Went for a quick blast around and introduced the wife to the new pse😂

She actually liked it but asked if is supposed to pop like that 🤣

She was equally happy I could turn it off for a more relaxing drive 👍

So tempted to get PSE but worried about the stories of drone with PDK. Have you experienced any drone on yours at low revs?

Hi there, I can t say I’ve experienced any drone and I have fully tested it over this last week.
You have got quite a bit of control over the sound, Sports mode with PDK in manual and exhaust on seems to be the loudest with all the pops and bangs. The same with sports mode turned off gives you a louder exhaust but no or little pops. Exhaust turned off still gives you a louder exhaust than standard but nothing you would really notice.

Ive tried all the different combinations at different speeds and with the roof up and down and I have to say it is a brilliant bit of kit which really transforms the driving experience plus it is excellent getting the exhaust to pop when your overtaking those pesky cyclists 😂👌

I had PSE Retro fitted last Nov and it’s money well spent getting your smiles per miles. Over the last week starting from my home town of Barry S Wales I’ve done the London the Brighton run last Sunday and then continued down to Cornwall. So a total of six days with the Mrs covering some 930 miles. A few hundred of which were on motorways at a cruising 75mph and honestly no drone at all. I play with the PSE quite a lot turning it on/off as the feedback most give to avoid the dreaded seizing is USE IT and of course the odd bit of lubrication. So IMHO the PSE does not cause drone.
What I would say is roof down sport mode is the most audible fun with lots of pops crackles and bangs 😂😂😂😎👍

PDK Folks - how do you use your gears in manual mode?

I'm a bit new to all of this, and still understanding the manual mode when I'm on a nicer A or B road. On youtube videos, I see people shifting from 1 > 2 at around 35mph, and then taking 2nd gear all the way to 75 😮. Is this common?

Another q - do you downshift when in manual mode? Or leave it up to the PDK to do it? I've downshifted when I suddenly come across a nice piece of empty road and am on 5th or 6th at 40mph, cause throttle response isnt as immediate in those gears at that speed. But I usually downshift to 3rd in those cases....can I go lower? In general in manual mode on British A, B roads, are you basically in 2nd + 3rd or 3rd + 4th or all three 🤔?

If I'm in manual and approach a red light or roundabout, I just brake and let the pdk downshift for me. Do folks do this differently?

When in automatic PDK mode and cruising in 6th or 7th gear at 60mph, if I put my foot down, the throttle response is not instant, takes a few seconds and slowly builds up. Is this expected?

Umm.

You basically change gear when you want to, sometimes I short shift sometimes I take it right up to red line. Whatever floats your boat and depends on the road.

You don’t have to down shift if you are coming to a stop but equally you can and I often do. You really can treat it as a manual with paddles or let the auto do bits for you.

When your in auto and you want to pick up the pace, if floor the throttle it normally drops a couple of gears and flies along. I think you need a bit of practice and I remember when I first had mine it took a short while to get use to it but it soon became second nature👍

finished off my carplay install today,   took longer than i hoped but i was in and out dropping kids off at bbqs etc so would have been nice to concentrate on it.   man is it fiddly,  ive changed loads of things on the car but hmmm  i didnt enjoy this one,  taking the pcm apart is dead easy but the wires and finding somewhere nice and out the way.   the biggest problem for me was once the 12v port panel near passenger footwell is removed, it really does make it very easy.  happy with what its given me,  google maps, waze,  amazon music, spotify.

managed to rout a cable into the armrest from the back of  unit so i can hardwire it to the joyeauto rather than wireless if i need to.

overall really happy with how it looks and the functionality.

Great work @robporsche

For anyone considering this www.joyeauto.com saw my installation video and is offering $30 off using the code 'tds' in the promo box. Not sure it's the cheapest option but buying direct should guarantee the best support.

This is my first experience of PDK and I think I initially spent too much time thinking about it.

I've found it easiest to ignore whatever the gear number is and treat it more like a PlayStation, flipping up and down gears to whatever is appropriate for whether pushing on on or not.

When I bought this it was partly to see what it was like to drive and live with a DCT and figured the next car would be back to a manual.  Now I'd say there's enough pros and cons to either choice that I'd be happy with either.

In Auto mode if you want the speed to pick up quicker mash the throttle into the carpet, it will kick down to an appropriate gear and then you'll get a quicker increase of speed. Or if you don't want warp speed then just press the throttle hard enough (but not to kickdown position) and then lift off and it'll drop a grear maybe 2.
