Always been a fan of Yokohama tyres, used to have the AVS back in the day and would stick really well to the road!

Yeah, grip is great because they leave more rubber on the road than other tyres as they wear down quickly... 🤣

Seriously they are a good grippy tyre.

I washed the car for the first time in a few weeks... was just a quick wash and dry but the layers of polish from last year have done a great job of protecting the paintwork from Winter. A couple of small bits of kerbing but I will get the wheels refurbed in a few weeks anyway.

I have the quandry that I will soon lose the driveway that the car currently gets to park on. The woman that owns the house and kindly let me use her drive sadly passed away a few weeks ago. :(

So, when the house gets sold I will be fighting for the spaces out front on the road which is not ideal. This has led to me considering selling the car and buying something worth a lot less. I am still undecided as although I do not do a lot of miles (3,400 in the 11 months I have owned it!) I do love driving it. We will see though.. a couple of quick snaps

This morning I when I pressed the window switch I got the familiar crunching noise of a window regulator giving up the ghost. I have changed these myself 3 times on the 986S I had. I learned that its not worth buying pattern parts as they do not last and often the window drop is not correct on them either.

Thought I would ask a couple of Porsche "Specialists" that are local for quotes.

Now, the Regulator from Porsche is £291 inc vat which of course means D911 quote that amount plus vat 😆

The first Specialist quoted me £503 all in.. the job itself is about an hour. One big difference between the 986 and the 987 is there is no membrane that you need to replace anymore. Porsche replaced it with an reusable aluminium panel that is held in with 8 screws. I had a look at a couple of "How to" videos on Youtube and apart from the aluminium panel it seems exactly the same to do as the 986, so I had already decided to do the job myself and save the extra £200.

I got an email back from the other so called "Specialist" telling me they would have to "replace the inner door membrane as it works out more cost effective than to clean and reseal the old one" and the total cost all in would be £763.39 for them to do the job. I did send a reply saying that it was strange they were quoting for a membrane when there is not one to replace 😆

New Regulator delivered by Fedex from MidSussex Porsche at 9-30 this morning. Can't fault the service (although I did give them the part number which made it easier 😆)

Just got to decide when to fit it now. I have managed to position the height of the glass so that it does not catch the roof when opening the door and doesn't allow water in either. Think I will do it either Sunday or Tuesday though

Mark the glass around the fixing points on the glass with a Sharpie or tape; makes it much easier to get it close to the right position on the replacement regulator.

Yeah I watched 3 how to videos on You Tube... one of them was terribly bad! The other 2 were good.

When I did the 986 I used a marker pen to mark the window glass. I have some blue painters tape that I think I will use this time. It really does look identical to the 986 job, apart from the aluminium inner panel instead of the Membrane that you have on the 986.

I reckon 1 hour should do it from start to finish

Remember the door panel clips are prone to commit suicide.

1 year ago I bought this blind at auction without even seeing it.

I have only covered 3,950 miles in the last 12 months.. it has so far cost me 1 cam position sensor, 1 service, 4 new tyres and 1 window regulator. I also paid for the front end to be resprayed and the wheels refurbished, and of course crested centre caps.

Today is the first day the weather has been suitable to change the window regulator but it will have to wait a few days as I had surgery yesterday.

It is a great example that decent cars are out there, at auction and it is not just cars with lots of issues that go through.

Happy gotcha day car!

I just speed-read the whole thread. You had quite an eventful year, with Mr Road Rage (who really picked on the wrong guy)!

Hope your parking gets sorted. That really is a heck of a car.

Wait, I have the perfect solution.  Why don't you and 1/2cwt just do a direct swap? 💡

It has been discussed...  I'm keeping the 986.  More a case that mine isn't quite good enough for him (probably fair) than the price.

My first 987.1 had a lazy tappet.. I thought I could live with it, in reality it annoyed the cr*p out of me. Not that your 986 is not good enough, its a great looking car that you have done the majority of jobs that will need doing... its just the noisy tappet is a "feature" that I can not stand  :(

So today, the sun was out and I am feeling a bit better so I changed the Window regulator. Pretty much like the you tube video I looked at, except being the drivers door in the Uk and passenger door in the US there is a bigger window / Mirror switch loom. I could not work out where it disconnects to get the inner panel off. There is also the loom for the airbag that needs to be disconnected that is connected inside the door. I was struggling to get that off as well.
So I decided to do it with the inner panel a few inches from the door. It was actually ok. I marked the position of the window with tape and noted where the adjustment nuts on the base of the door were (both were central).

I put it all back together before testing it, bar a few screws for the door handle. Usually this means it wont work and you have to take it all to bits but all worked fine.

Reprogrammed the window drop and have a silky smooth operating window again.

Would definitely recommend an OEM regulator, yes its more expensive but they last and the window drop is the perfect gap.

So that saved me between £200 - £500 in labour from the quotes I got !
