Boxster #4

Nothing much to report. Car has been performing perfectly #standard. The new Yokohama tyres on the front are nice..but then new tyres always feel better than worn out ones.

Will give the glass a clay bar tomorrow as I forgot when I did the rest of the car. Thanks to @Mattman42 for the reminder. Might give it another coat of wax too while I am there.

Got the confirmation from my useless insurers that the claim was settled. When I logged on the portal I see they have charged Aviva £2,150 for dealing with the claim. Bit rich considering Axa did 'uck all really, I should get that money.

Anyway, washed it at work today so here is a quick pic...

Today I have cleaned and repainted the wheel bolts.
Now this is something that I would not normally do, but knowing how fussy some buyers are, especially when paying top dollar I figured I should get it done ;)

Before and after in the same pic for you

All finished... although one of the locking wheel bolts is missing its washer/collar so will have to look at getting a new set or see if I can get one replacement bolt.

Go with 5 standard bolts.  Wouldn't worry me. 😉

As for the ditch finders....   I've got Dunlop (f) and GY (r)on the 986.

Car has just ticked over 81,000 miles which means since I bought it on 15th March (a full 5 months ago) I have covered 1,500 miles in it. 😬 It pretty much just goes back and forth to work a whole 16 mile round trip each day.

Just cleaned it for the first time since painting the bolts and it does indeed look a lot better. Now that the bonnet and front and rear bumpers have been resprayed there are only the usual stone chips round the side vents.

Doing the man maths on a Sierra Cosworth that I have been to see so potentially I could be moving this on. I am not sure on price, think I could advertise it on Auto trader for £22k and wait around but think it would sell quick at £20k.

Decisions, decisions,

Don’t drive it, you’ll ruin the tracking and probably a wheel bearing!

It turned out that the collar was not missing, it had just become detached from the bolt and was hiding in the wheel still! All reattached to the bolt now

Yeah, looking on Autotrader for 987.2 3.4 the asking prices seem to be about that for lower spec cars.

I guess the trick is finding someone that realises (and cares) what the differences are between a poverty spec / average spec and every box ticked spec.

Still undecided what to do but the Cosworth is not advertised currently (it is a friends car) so I have time to consider. Drove it for the first time in a week yesterday and of course when you open the roof and press the PSE button it does make me grin

If you have the chance of picking up a Colmworth at a reasonable price, it will be a good investment.

Which variation is it?

Good luck with the sale. When I was in the market in May June there was a good red 987.2 with all the bits including switchable exhaust and that was on for £18.5k with 50 or 60k miles

It didn’t sell quickly and it was very a sunny time. I saw it advertised before I went off holiday in May and actually viewed it the day I bought my 986 in mid June. I was very surprised it hadn’t sold at that price. I would have bought it but preferred the simplicity of the 986 seeing them back to back.

So you’d be going from “every box ticked” to “poverty spec”?

Nah, wouldn’t bother mate…

Yeah but he'll get it for a fiver and it will shoot £50 notes out the exhaust when he fires it up.

I can remember seeing one of them in Tunbridge Wells Ford, and convinced I remember it being about 35k; early to mid 90s. I was talking myself into a Scoob for 20k and thought “What if I stretch… Nah.”

Its decisions like that why I still work full time.

Memory might be playing tricks and they never dropped below 60k, but the outcome is the same.

2WD Sapphire is probably the 'weakest' of the Cosworth series.  It was never raced or rallied at top level as that variant, only the 4x4 version was.  For best investment you really need a 2 door Sierra, a 4x4 Sapphire or an Escort.  The is also the RS500 but as a road car they are big money for very little gain other than kudos, in some ways worst to drive than the 2 door or the 2WD Sapphire as the homologation add-ons didn't benefit the road version 227 vs 204 PS but lots more turbo lag and added drag.

Not sure RS200s would have been £35k when Scoobies were around.  The nadir was about 1988 after they had been banned from International and National competition at the end of 1986, except rallycross.  Would likely have been climbing again by mid-90s (Impreza came to UK market in late '93 (some had K plates IIRC or they may have been imports/press cars).

I worked for a supplier (Crosby GRP) to the 6R4 programme in '87 to '88.  Could have had a basic 6R4 for £17,500 +VAT (only 15% back then) but not for road registration unless for competition purposes only, they were still legal in the British Rally Championship as n/a engines in Gp B had restrictors fitted for National competition so only the 6R4 qualified.

Yes I am struggling to place the year. I wasn’t interested in scoobs until perhaps 98, and this could have been as early as 92; if the nadir was after the ban, then we had recession 90-92, then that would make the lower price seem likely.

Anything with a 'fast ford' badge of the 80-90's seeks to be stupid money for the last few years, you expect the bubble to burst, but no signs yet.

One for you then @Menoporsche https://www.4starclassics.com/for-sale/subaru-impreza-wrx-sti-spec-c-limited-for-sale/
