What have YOU done to your 987 today

Bought a heavy duty stapler and finally sorted out the crappy elastic for the roof.

The drivers side would miss the guide 50% of the time.

Did both and so easy with the right tools

No, so cheap with the right tools... needle and thread for a quid.
Next; buying a hydraulic press for the nuts at Christmas...

So not the best updates, I dropped the car into my preferred indie specialist just for a yearly check kast Thursday, change plugs, oil, air filter, aux belt and what i thought would be an easy upgrade of changing the MC to the GT3 item.

They called Thursday afternoon to say the new TRW mc must be faulty as they cant bleed the brakes so i need to return it (i purchased it seperately). So asked them to put the std one back on.

Friday comes, the std one is also not bleeding so something wrong with the brakes.. erm they were fine when it came in and you have two mc's to chose from so surely the fault is elsewhere chaps?

Monday came and went, nothing, Tuesdays update is they still cant bleed, so are currently trying to "free off the valves" which are stuck - i have no idea what this means. so were into day 5 tomorrow, not looking forward to this bill! I did also have to point out that they changed the brake fluid last March so presumably had no such issues bleeding the brakes only 350 miles ago.....

Tried needle and thread method twice, but it ultimately failed.

My level of sewing isn't going to make it on that wretched TV programme on the subject.

Sounds odd - wonder if they have got air into the ABS unit and need some diags of some flavour to make the car cycle the ABS valves to allow bleeding - sounds like they have generated a problem to me - and as such - the labour to resolve should be down to them

The upholstery specialist who was replacing the rear vinyl window in my 986 at the weekend told me not to be tempted to staple these as it can result in a tear starting from the staples if they create a tension in the fabric when I asked about how to deal with these if they were to fail.

I am hoping they subscribe to the "we introduced this" thought when it came in fine and had two mcs to use...

If they can't cycle the ABS using an OBD gadget, tell them to go down the road, press the brakes until the abs works a few times, which it should, despite the squishy pedal. Then bleed again.

That was the advice I had when I fitted my GT3 M/C and worked a treat. brakes went from horrible to awesome in 5 mins. Also make sure they are bleeding using inner and outer nipples on each caliper.

For example, have a look at this thread. Guarantee it's not a faulty M/C.

When I changed mine took an age to bleed, starting furthest away with a vacuum bleeder, and repeatedly going around , working the pedal as well and ensuring the cylinder was always topped up and bleeding both sides of the calipers ,it came eventually, but did take quite some time, they probably did not prime the MC in the first place as a guess

Decided to accept the condenser replacement DIY challenge (after @Mike1960 shared great notes on how easy bumper removal is on a 987.2) and after realising can do with front wheels left in place on the plastic low profile ramps I already have, i.e. no need to buy trolley jack and axle stands (spent the money saved on a 10 manufacturer  icarsoft v2 analyser from ukpartsdirect instead)

Not sure how much PAG oil to inject into condensers and dessicator - varying amounts in other threads and forums from nothing to 40ml per condenser and 10ml in the dessicator.  Open to suggestion.

Ordered today, most to be received tomorrow -  for fitting over the weekend, fingers crossed weather holds good:-

It works well and better than the 1/2 inch bra strap that was there from factory.

The stuff I have used is 3 inch wide so do not see staples coming out. will check it yearly like my drain holes

So a better day today (well ish), car finished at the indie, they swallowed the extra bleeding costs etc.

But with fitting quick shift (ebay), bmc filter, gt3 ducts, gt3 master cylinder (pedal is sooooooooo much better), bleeding brakes (1 hour charged only) a faulty roof rod, oil change, new filter and sump gasket, aux belt change, oil etc i didnt get much change from 1100 quid.

The quick shift i have not noticed that much difference... but the gt3 master cylinder was a MASSIVE difference to braking feel.

Following up on the 200 cell cat manifolds, replacement. Well 11 out of 12 bolts out, one sheared leaving a 3/8 stub , welded a nut on , started to move then sheared flush, so out with the drill jig kit( nice bit a kit) all sorted, just waiting on a couple of lambda sensors, then it’s out to test the replacement rear strut and manifolds 😊😊

what is the improvement? firmer pedal?

cheers,

MUCH firmer pedal, did not need the shove it once did.

PMN166 TRW 99735591030 is what i ordered, 80 euros from Germany, but they no longer ship to the uk, so i had a friend receive it in Germany and post it over as its about £170 here!

2nd day into clutch, flywheel, exhaust, rear control arms, tuning forks etc and spring replacement.

1st day, rear bumper off, control arms out, tuning forks out, drop links and sway bar out (all being replaced).  Got to the point where we were fighting with the exhaust flange bolts, got 1 side done and then stopped for the night.

Today, got the exhaust off (hurrah!!), gear shift cables disconnected, slave cylinder unbolted and loose but cant get it out past the bracket holding another gear linkage that goes over the top of the transmission. Any body have any words of wisdom?

Hoping tomorrow will be a better day and actually get the gearbox out.

I'm optimistic it should all fly back together as most of it will be new!

Time for a well earned beer and bath........

From memory, you appear to have every disconnected, short of undoing rear  mounts and bell housing , drive shafts , jobs a good un for dragging out

Yesterday but hey ho.

After a couple of weeks off the road at the paint shop, finally got round to cleaning up the summer wheels.

Prepped with C5 wheel armour in the hope that cleaning the lobster claws is much less a pita this year.

I hadn’t heard of C5 before, so just watched their ‘how to apply’ video. Did you use the pre and post product, or just the C5?

Just wondering whether all three are really necessary?
